Conference on Women Achievers – 2009 (WACON’09)

Conference on Women Achievers – 2009 (WACON ’09), the Third State Conference of SHAKTI was conducted on 25th and 26th of April 2009 at YNP Trust Hall, Fort Cochin. The aim of the conference was to give a platform for the women from different strata of our society to meet and learn from each other.

Dr. B Sandhya, I.P.S inaugurated the function by lighting the traditional lamp. In her inaugural address Dr. Sandhya said that gender specific development is the need of the hour and that women should break the glass ceiling and come up in career. In Maharastra, property registered in a women’s name is eligible for 10% discount in stamp duty, while Kerala known for its high rate of women literacy and population remains in the dark as far as this provision in the property law is concerned. She also urged the SHG groups to fly high rather than confine themselves to pickle and pappad making. She also touched upon the need to improve facilities for women across the state and lamented over the deplorable situation prevailing in the state. Moreover, she urged that it is high time that the government considered 30% reservation for women in politics and that it is high time that the situation where a couple of women candidates only are contesting elections should get changed.

Technical session began with a talk by Dr. Sarada Dasaji, of Oneness University, Chennai. Her talk focused on the Ying and Yang energy flow in human beings. She said that modern life is all about measurement. Every one compares everything with everyone else and feel depressed, thus fail to enjoy all the little joy in life. Mind is running on the fuel, comparison and modern man always confront conflicting situation as he fails to accept `the present ` in life. She stressed the need to have inner integrity by accepting the truth as it is to negate the inner conflict.

 

Group Discussions

  • The fisher women folk complained about lack of financial support from government agencies and said that panchayats are of no help to them.
  • The SHG groups had the urge to learn more to earn more.
  • Home makers expressed concerns about changing dimensions of human relationships and value erosion in new generation.
  • The scientists/teachers group had expressed the desire to conduct periodical counseling to young girls and make them aware of the value based education system.

Invited talk of the day 2 was delivered by Padmasree Sugatha Kumari after a formal introduction of the guest to the audience by Dr. Rajalakshmi Subramanian . Smt. Sugathakumari in her emotional speech depicted the sorry state of affairs of women in general and girls in particular. She narrated real life stories of child abuse and rape victims. She also emphasized the need of ensuring equality, security and authority to women through her inner strength which is not skin deep.

The chief gust of the valedictory session was Dr. Khadeeja Mumtaz. Dr. Mumtaz in her speech said that women were hesitant to take up social responsibilities as they are fearful that their role as a home maker will be affected. She also insisted that mothers should ensure adequate care to their girl children and that they should make them feel that they are cared and loved. She also cautioned that the history of girls getting trapped in sex rackets can be traced back to insecure and broken homes. Sri Arjun, Mukkunnath, State Organizing Secretary, Swadeshi Science Movement, in his valedictory address said that women were always given higher status by our ancient society and that modern society should ensure the same status to women. Dr. Rosamma Stephen presented the consolidated report of the meet and cash prizes were distributed to the winners of the essay competition conducted in connection with the meet. Dr. Sudha Scientist, TBGRI was declared as the woman achiever from among the scientific community considering her efforts in popularizing medicinal plant cultivation among the rural women of Alleppey district. The meeting culminated with the vote of thanks by Dr. Rajalakshmi Subramanian.

 

 
Seminar on Adolescent Guidance

 

1.0 INTRODUCTION 
As part of the third State Conference of SHAKTI, two seminars on ‘Adolescent Guidance’ were conducted at Kozhikode and Kochi districts of Kerala. In both the seminars the resource person was Dr. C.N. Balkrishnan Nambiar from Calicut. 


2.0 RESOURCE PERSON
1Dr. C.N. Balkrishnan Nambiar: A renowned clinical psychologist from Holistic Hospital Calicut is also serving as Principal, Devakiamma Memorial Teachers’ Education College, Chellambra since 24 years. His regular practices include counseling for students in many schools and colleges, Govt Old age home, Calicut, MD Guest Faculty in Homeo Medical College Calicut. Apart from these he had taken more than 2000 classes on parenting and individual counseling throughout India. His academic in Calicut University raise from Masters Degree in Clinical Psycology M.Ed. in Guidance and Counseling, and M. Phil in Pshyco Educational Guidance. He took his PhD in Clinical Psycology from Newage International University. Ph. 0495 2730967

 

3.0 SEMINARS

3.1 Kozhikode

The seminar was conducted at Mahalakshmi Auditorium, Pudiyappa coastal belt, Kozhikode on 22 February 2009 at 11 am. Forty coastal women attended the class. Dr. Rajlekshmi Subramanium, Technical Officer, School of Environmental Studies CUSAT, Kochi, presided over the function. The class highlighted on the role of mother in bringing up of a child and her attention towards their adolescent stage. The session concluded with a live interaction by delegates. Interaction highlighted on the common issues prevalent in their community among children of different age groups.

 (The coastal women of this sector are mostly engaged in activities based on fish. Most of the women have their education at least up to 10th class. Their enthusiasm for preparing themselves for guiding their children towards healthy living is appreciable.)  

 3.2 Kochi

The seminar was conducted at Seva Samithi Auditorium, Cherlai, Fort Kochi on 28 March 2009 at 11 am. Sixty women delegates comprising of Teachers. Housewives, Professionals, attended the class. Dr. M.R.Shanta Devi, President SHAKTI, presided over the function. Here also the class stressed on the role of mother in bringing up the child and her attention towards their adolescent stage. In the interactive session delegates expressed their views by suggesting students groups to be incorporated in future classes. It was also suggested that follow up classes of similar kind are necessary to bring the desired results. Dr. Rosamma Stephen, Scientist (Retd) NIO rendered vote of thanks.

 3.3 The concluding sessions in both the seminars were the overview of SHAKTI’S 3RD State Conference presented.

4.0 CONCLUSION
The response of the participants during both the seminars is encouraging. The participants had taken part actively in the discussion during the interactive session that followed the talk by the resource person. SHAKTI is planning a follow up seminar in the two areas next month.

 
National Conference on Women Achievers – 2009

Shakti-the National movement for women is formed with a great desire and determination of uniting the women of India for a creative purpose.

Shakti believes in mutual love, recognition, and appreciation based on the sacred concept of `Ardhanareeswara sankalpam ‘. Upholding the sanctity of Indian womanhood, it aspires for re-awakening the creative potential of women. Shakti urges our women to come out of their shells through self realization.

Shakti headquartered at Kochi, Kerala got the inspiration and instigation from Vijnana Bharati, which is essentially a science movement with the motto `Science and Technology for social harmony’. It strives for national resurgence and development. Shakti focuses its endeavors for uplifting our womanhood on the social, intellectual, cultural and economic perspectives . To a great extent, Shakti has been successful in sensitizing the community in general on issues related to women.

Opportunity for acquiring the right kind of education will make our women realize their inner potential of love and sacrifice. Making them intellectually strong and self reliant will enable women play key roles complementary to men. Shakti has been relentlessly striving to build a platform for women who with their commitment have proved their capacity in empowering themselves .In its first state conference , Shakti provided a platform for women representatives across the board . Now Shakti is organizing its 3rd State conference WACON`09 at cochin during April 25th -26th 2009. Hundreds of women from various sectors are expected to participate in the conference. The conference aims at providing a meeting place for the women to care and share.

The aim of the conference is to bring women achievers from varied fields ( tribal, coastal, agricultural, industrial fields, self help groups as well as professionals, entrepreneurs, teachers, Scientists, research scholars and students) to a single platform. There are women who have made outstanding contributions in their respective fields and are a source of inspiration to the thousands of other women. They may act as role models and help motivate those who haven’t been as lucky.

The theme of the conference is ` Successful women’

The highlight of WACON’09 is keynote talk by women who have managed to become successful in different strata of our society. Women (from tribal, coastal, agricultural, industrial fields, self help groups as well as professionals, entrepreneurs, teachers, Scientists, research scholars and students) are invited to share their experience of bravery in their life and how they overcame odds to reach where they are.

Healthy Women Healthy Society

Inauguration

The Inauguration of the workshop was held on 31 December 2008.

InaugurationDr. Madhavankutty, Retd. DMO, Calicut District inaugurated the workshop and delivered a Keynote speech on “Healthy Women and Healthy Society”. In his inaugural address he stressed on the importance of holistic approach for healthy living. He later stated that an overall aspect of health which include physical, mental nutritional and social are the four pillars on which the abode of healthy life style exists. For maintaining these four pillars the role of a mother is tremendous. So it is inevitable to make her aware of the varied intricacies of health aspect in today’s life style.

Prof. Gokulchandran, HOD, Department of Chemistry, Zamorin’s Guruvayurappan College, Calicut welcomed the gathering, Shri Arjunan Mukunnath, Organising Secretary, Swadeshi Science Movement, Kerala presided over the function, Prof Sumathy, Principal Zamorin’s Guruvayurappan College, Calicut blessed the workshop with her felicitation. Vote of thanks was given by Smt. Bindu Suraj, SHAKTI, Kerala.
